You Are Not Behind — You Are In Season

You Are Not Behind — You Are In Season

A common statement that people make is, “I should be further along by now.”

It may be about a relationship, their health, their purpose, a career, or simply where they imagined they would be at this stage of life.

Underneath all of those thoughts is one small word that quietly carries a great deal of weight: should.

“Should” compares where we are with where we believe we ought to be. It measures our journey against a timeline that is often shaped by expectations rather than by the natural unfolding of our own lives.

But what if you are not behind? What if your life is unfolding exactly as it needs to, preparing you for something you could not have received any sooner?

Nature never apologizes for its seasons. A seed is not late because it has not yet become a tree. It is simply in the season of becoming. Perhaps we are no different.

You Have Your Own Timing

A significant burden we carry is the belief that we should be somewhere other than where we are.

Many of us learned that success, love, acceptance, or even our worth depended on reaching certain milestones by a certain age or in a certain order.

Over time, we began measuring ourselves against someone else’s timeline instead of listening to our own. But life doesn’t unfold that way.

Nature doesn’t compare one season to another. Spring doesn’t apologize for arriving after winter, and a tree doesn’t rush to bear fruit before its roots are strong enough to support it.

Our lives unfold in much the same way. Every experience prepares us for what comes next. Every challenge offers an opportunity to grow. Every season has its own purpose, even when we cannot yet see it.

If you find yourself thinking, “I should be further along by now,” gently ask yourself: according to whom?

You are not behind. You are in season.

Perhaps you are not behind at all. Perhaps you are exactly where this season of your life is asking you to be.

Timing Is Not the Enemy

Over more than thirty-five years of working with people, I have learned that every life unfolds in its own time.

I have watched people discover their purpose in their thirties, embrace a new direction in their fifties, and awaken to gifts in their seventies that simply could not have been received any earlier.

I have never believed age determines our readiness. Readiness comes through experience, awareness, healing, and integration.

Sometimes what feels like standing still is actually a season of profound change. Old beliefs are being released. New understanding is taking root. The person you have been is making room for the person you are becoming.

From the outside, it may look like nothing is happening. From the inside, everything is changing.

Nature reminds us of this every year. Winter is not a failure of spring. It is part of the cycle that makes new growth possible. Perhaps the quiet seasons of your life are not delaying you. Perhaps they are preparing you for what comes next.

You don’t have to sit with this alone. Cosmic Travelers meets monthly for exactly this kind of unfolding.

What Being “In Season” Really Means

Being in season doesn’t mean everything is blooming. Every season has its purpose.

Some seasons are filled with visible growth. Others invite us to slow down, reflect, heal, and integrate what we have already experienced.

Just because nothing appears to be changing on the outside doesn’t mean nothing is happening. Some of the most important growth takes place beneath the surface.

Think about a seed. Before it ever breaks through the soil, it is developing roots strong enough to support what it will one day become.

We are no different. If you feel as though life has slowed down, perhaps this isn’t a season of delay. Perhaps it is a season of preparation — a season to allow a new understanding to take root, old patterns to be released, and the next expression of your life to be quietly formed.

Trust what cannot yet be seen. In time, what has been growing within you will naturally begin to appear in the world around you.

You Are Not Stuck. You May Simply Be Finding Your Way

There is an important difference between feeling stuck and feeling lost.

When we believe we are stuck, we often stop trusting ourselves. We begin looking outside ourselves for answers, believing something has gone wrong.

But sometimes we are simply standing at the edge of something new. The old way no longer fits, and the new way has not yet fully revealed itself. This is often where your inner knowing begins to speak.

Not loudly. But quietly, through your intuition, your body, your curiosity, and the gentle pull toward something that feels more aligned with who you are becoming.

Rather than asking, “How do I get out of this?” perhaps ask, “What is this season preparing me for?”

If you find yourself in a season of uncertainty, be gentle with yourself. Listen more deeply. Trust the timing of your own unfolding.

You are not behind. You are not stuck. You are becoming. And remember… you know more than you know.

How to Tell the Difference Between Rest and Avoidance

Not every quiet season is the same. There are times when life is asking us to pause, reflect, heal, and integrate. There are other times when we may be avoiding the very thing that is calling us forward.

How do we know the difference? Begin by listening to your body.

A season of preparation often carries a quiet sense of movement beneath the surface. Even though nothing may appear to be changing outwardly, there is an inner knowing that something is unfolding. There is patience, curiosity, and a growing readiness for what comes next.

Avoidance feels different. It often comes with contraction. We distract ourselves, postpone decisions, or remain where we no longer belong because change feels uncomfortable or uncertain.

Neither state deserves judgment. Both are invitations to become more aware.

If you’re unsure where you are, don’t rush to find the answer. Become curious. Ask yourself, “Am I resting because something within me is growing, or am I holding back because I am afraid of taking the next step?”

Your body usually knows the answer before your mind does. Learning to recognize that inner wisdom is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself.

A Simple Practice for Seasons That Feel Long

If you find yourself wondering when life will begin moving again, I invite you to spend a few quiet moments with this question:

If I truly trusted that I was exactly where I needed to be, what would I stop rushing?

Write whatever comes to you. Don’t judge it. Don’t try to make it profound.

Simply allow your thoughts to unfold. You may discover that what you have been longing for is not another answer, but a deeper trust in your own timing.

Sometimes the greatest shift doesn’t come from doing more. It comes from seeing where you are with new eyes.
